Advantages

least expensive
good road feel

Drawbacks

loud

The least expensive trainer, our second best seller. Advantages are low cost, a simple resistance unit with nothing to break and most importantly: Excellent road feel. Wind trainers have variable resistance. You change work loads the same way you do outdoors: By using the gears on your bicycle, the best way to vary resistance. The wind trainer mimics the onset of resistance you experience riding outdoors. The faster you go, the harder it is to go faster. With a wind trainer you are working against the same resistance as riding outdoors: Aerodynamic drag. Drawbacks are noise and a narrow resistance band. Wind trainers sound like a hair dryer on low. You can watch TV or listen to music, but you'll need to turn it up. If you live in an apartment or train when people are sleeping, the wind trainer may be a poor choice. I use headphones and a walkman on a wind trainer. The resistance level is good, but does not go as high as a fluid trainer, which offers the widest resistance band.

Advantages

Less Expensive
Nearly Silent

Drawbacks

poor resistance band

People buy magnetic trainers because they are quiet and moderately priced. They are nearly silent even when riding all out, but offer a very narrow resistance band and a "linear" onset of resistance. Resistance does not accumulate as quickly as it does outdoors, so the trainer does not have an accurate "road feel". In an attempt to make the road feel more accurate, Mag trainers rely on an adjustment mechanism on the resistance unit. Our experience is magnetic trainers are the least durable, although covered by a lifetime warranty from Graber. All indoor trainers (wind, fluid and mag) from Cycle-Ops have variable resistance. However, with the mag trainer you must use the trainer's resistance setting to vary the resistance. With the wind and fluid models you vary the resistance with the gears of your bike- the same way you do while actually riding outdoors. The mag trainer is our third best seller. People who buy it want a trainer less expensive than the Fluid trainer, but quieter than a wind trainer.

Our best selling indoor trainer. Fluid trainers are the best of all worlds: They provide a wide resistance band, from very easy to extremely difficult. Using the variable resistance of your bicycle's gears, you can simulate a steep hill climb or spin easily and everything in between. Fluid trainers are nearly silent even when going all out. The road feel is the best of all the trainers, closely mimicing the feeling of riding outdoors. Fluid trainers also have excellent durability.Perhaps the only drawback of the fluid trainer is cost. This is easy to justify since it is not much more expensive than a mag trainer, lasts much longer, and provides better "road feel" plus higher levels of resistance and truly variable resistance (unlike the mag trainer which relys on an external adjustment to artificailly "induce" variable resistance).
