2008 Quintana Roo Kilo.

Quintana Roo Kilo

Quintana Roo Kilo

The first triathlon bike. The Kilo was born in 1987 as the Superform, invented by Dan Empfield (Publisher of Slowtwitch.com), it was the first steep seat tube angle, aerobar specific triathlon bike. Because the Kilo celebrates its 21st anniversary in 2008 it becomes the oldest, most proven and most refined triathlon bike in the cycling industry.

Among the many interesting features of the Kilo is the fact that the price hasn’t changed much from about 20 years ago. It is $1499 MSRP (Our price varies, phone 313 278 1350 for details) in 2008 but has significant upgrades including a Shimano Dura-Ace rear derailleur and shifters, genuine Visiontech cockpit, aero shaped AN-6 heat treated, custom drawn aluminum frameset and Alex ALX 220 wheels. This is the least expensive Dura-Ace shifter and rear derailleur equipped tri bike available.

After years of evolution the Kilo has found its roots again with a steep-ish seat tube angle of 78.5 degrees in every size and a stable, relaxed, comfortable and confident 72 degree head tube angle. This is Dan Empfield’s geometry, and it is the set of numbers that makes the triathlon bike work. Your torso will be supported with the skeleton (not muscular force and you will run better off the Kilo’s geometry.

The Kilo is directed at the new triathlete and triathletes upgrading from a road bike with aerobars to a dedicated tri geometry bike. The $1499 price point (Our price varies, phone 313 278 1350 for details) makes it affordable, the high end parts spec means you won’t have to upgrade. The design and geometry means you will have one of the finest, and the first, true triathlon geometry bikes ever made.
