In 1999 I sailed to Antarctica on the Russian registered ship Akademik Ioofe with Marine Expeditions to participate in The Last Marathon on the Antarctic continent. It isn't the last race on Antarctica, but is called that since it is generally the last race anyone would every do since it is so difficult to get to the starting line. During our first landing we recieved a safety briefing on the wildlife. It was important we kept a certain distance from the animals for their protection and ours. But the seals and penguins had different ideas and approached us without reservation or fear. From a distance it was novel, but up close the animals became large, smelly and imposing. Especially when you realize you're no longer at the top of the food chain. Emerging from a giant pile of belching seals I shot this portarait of the one snoozing with the
Snot Nose.
